Apprenticed with engraver, Peter Maverick in Newark, NJ in 1812, by 1817 had entered into partnership with Maverick and opened a New York City office. He was commissioned to engrave Trumbull's "Declaration of Independence" which provoked Maverick's jealousy and caused the partnership to crumble in 1820. He worked on several engraving ventures and did work for the National Portrait Gallery from 1831-1835. In 1837 he accompanied Mr & Mrs. Thomas Cole on a sketching trip to the Adirondacks, he thereafter emerged as a landscape painter. |
