Description |
Asher B. Durand first came to the Adirondacks in 1837 with Thomas Cole and later traveled to Elizabethtown in June, 1848, with John F. Kensett and John W. Casilear. He described the scenery to his son in a letter dated that June: "The mountain scenery is beautiful, superior to any I have met within this country." Durand visited Keene Valley, Lake Placid, and Lake George several times over his long career. His last visit to the region was in 1877, at age eighty-one. Durand was a banknote engraver and painter of historical portraits and landscapes. His "Letters on Landscape Painting," published in the art periodical The Crayon in 1855, instructed many mid-nineteenth-century artists, usually self-taught, in the art of painting. In his letters he advocated painting in the presence of nature and paying close attention to the details of nature. Durand wrote: "Take pencil and paper, not the palette and brushes, and draw with scrupulous fidelity the outline or contour of such objects as you shall select, and, so far as your judgment goes, choose the most beautiful or characteristic of its kind." This painting exemplifies Durand's singular contribution as a teacher and artist. |
