Depicts a temporary camp on a clearing near a shoreline. One man and two dogs are returning from the hunt with ducks hanging off a stick over his shoulder. In front of a tent, another man adds wood to a fire underneath a large, black pot. In the background is a lake. Along the shore behind the trees is a guideboat carrying a dead buck. Mountains in the background. This hunting scene of the Adirondacks verges on a genre subject. In the quiet of early dawn a hunter returns to camp with his dogs and a loaded bag of prey. His companion readies the fire in front of their tent beneath giant trees. The woods all but envelope this tranquil scene, blending man into the forestscape rather than setting man apart to dominate nature. Wust was born in Holland and emigrated to this country at age fifteen. From 1858 to at least 1869 he maintained a studio in New York City and was a frequent exhibitor at the National Academy of Design and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, among others. His American landscapes include scenes of the Catskills, Adirondacks, the mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire, the Mohawk Valley and Mount Desert Island in Maine. Many of his works are large scale, emphasizing the vastness of the American landscape. Wust died at age thirty-nine in Antwerp. |
