Description |
Saranac Laker model guideboat built by J.H. Rushton of Canton between 1891 and 1906. Length: 15' 10" Beam: 38" Weight: 68 lbs "This craft, so familiar to frequenters of the Saranac region, is a very light, swift, and somewhat cranky boat," wrote J.H. Rushton in his 1888 catalog. He was introducing his version of the Adirondack guideboat. One of the elements that contributed to his success as a builder was his knowledge of the market, and in 1888 he knew people wanted guideboats, cranky though they might be. The Rushton boat shop offered an "Adirondack or Saranac Lake Boat" until 1908. Rushton described the boat as "both a pleasure and a hunting boat...a connecting link between the two..." Rushton guideboats were probably used primarily as pleasure boats and not intended to be carried far. They are heavier than the guideboats built by most other builders, having decorative deck beams and decks, and thick ribs and planking that were scorned by builders striving for a boat that could be carried a mile or two through the woods. Their shape is also fuller, for greater stability. This guideboat was fitted with a strongback for a canvas cover to keep out rain and leaves between uses. It was used on Brant Lake. c- Stern seat, d- Stern seat back, and f- Bow seat (all attached to boat with screws). |
