Description |
Lithograph, hand colored: depicts two men fishing through the ice. Man in center foreground wearing a blue coat with a red sash pulling a speckled trout out of a hole in the ice. Long-handles ice chisel and gloves to his left; five trout, basket, and a seat made of boughs to his right. In the middle distance sits another man sitting and fishing, an ax to his right. A wind blows snow off the lake in a sweeping curve. Mountains in the background. Artist Louis Maurer identified Thomas Barbour as the subject, recalling, "Tait the artist, and Thomas Barbour, a well-known hunter and fisherman, were friends who often visited, hunted, and fished together. In this print Tait has depicted Thomas Barbour in the act of "pulling one out." |
