Description |
Birch bark basket made ca. 1870 by Indian guide Samuel Benedict of Lake George, NY. Single piece of bent and cut birch bark sewn into a basket shape with a flat, rectangular bottom. Basket is sewn with strips of golden brown cane-like material. Small loops, probably at attachment for a missing handle, are on each end near the rim of the basket. Decorative geometric pattern around the mouth of the basket. The exterior of the basket is inside of the birch bark; the light-colored bark seen on the interior of the basket is the outer layer of tree bark. Prior marks inside the basket: "E.E. Nagazoa Aug 1934" under one rim and "8/34" inside a square under the opposite rim. |
Notes |
According to donor this was made by her father, Sam Benedict (b. 1837) "when he was first married in 1870" at Lake George. He was son of Louis Elijah (1792-1866) and grandson of Sabael Benedict (1765-1855). "E.E. Nagazoa Aug 1934" marking under one rim appears to refer to the donor (or possibly her husband Edwin) and the date they received the basket, not the date the basket was made. It is likely they were given the basket on or after the occasion of her father's death. |
