Description |
Depicts four men with two guideboats readying to cast off from the shore. Near the closer two is a pile of supplies for the excursion including rifles and cooking equipment. In the background is a forest which continues to the far shore of the lake. From exhibition label: During the last quarter of the nineteenth century and the first of the twentieth, A. B. Frost achieved enormous fame as an illustrator and an artist of sporting scenes. He illustrated the stories of distinguished writers like Lewis Carroll, Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, and Theodore Roosevelt in books and magazines. He is best known for his creation of Br'er Rabbit and Uncle Remus for Joel Chandler Harris' tales of Uncle Remus. His humorous scenes of rural America published in Scribner's and Collier's established a tradition of magazine art, distinct from story illustration. These same talents for faithful depiction render his scenes of hunting and fishing vivid and lifelike. An engraving, A Carry-The End, published in Harper's New Monthly Magazine, October, 1881, is based on this monochromatic painting. The accompanying article, "Adirondack Days," describes a beautiful canoe trip up the Saranac River, a difficult paddle across a choppy Saranac Lake to the three-mile Sweeny Carry between the lake and the Raquette River. The illustration depicts the campers arriving at the carry and their disappointment upon discovering the muddy waters of the Raquette River. |
