Notes |
This button relates to Orange Shirt Day (recognized September 30 on an annual basis) and the Every Child Matters movement. Both have grown in response to residential schools scattered around the U.S. and Canada in the 19th and 20th centuries that caused significant trauma to its survivors and even the deaths of thousands of innocent children. Indigenous communities are still grappling with the fallout today. Now often recognized as a form of genocide, residential schools sought to eradicate indigenous culture and forcefully assimilate children into western culture. Many children never returned to their families. Every Child Matters and Orange Shirt Day seek to spread awareness of these atrocities and remembrance for the children, the survivors and the victims, as well as their families. |
