Description |
Medium-sized birchbark basket decorated with porcupine quills and sweetgrass (probably). Birchbark body (.1a) and lid (.1b) with decorative stiching, and a star-like or maple leaf design on lid. Sweetgrass around rim of body and lid. Outer surface of lid and body (except base) fully decorated with quill work patterns. This basket is similar to two Ottawa baskets in collection at Rochester Museum Science Center. The Ottawa lived around the upper Great Lakes in 19th-20th century. Muskoka Lake is near Northeast shore of Lake Huron, on the edge of Ottawa territory. |
