From Herb's granddaughter: Herb Moore and his mother and brother owned about 30 camps around Eagle Lake, Chilton, NY, plus thousands of surrounding acres. According to family, Herb built all of his fishing and transportation boats. They were a well run, self-sufficient homesteading resort, they grew their own food and maintained themselves for decades. Summer guests to his Moore family resort on Eagle Lake were professionals from New York City, escaping the heat. The families staying all summer, the husbands (doctors, lawyers) came back and forth each week on the new Delaware and Hudson RR trains. The Moore Resort had horse-drawn buckboards to meet the guests at the RR station and brought them to the lovely quiet lake resort. The guests were transported to their camps by boat and each camp was left with their own boat. Each morning the Moore family girls rowed boats and delivered basic groceries to each camp for the day. The Spaulding Sports corporation and family bought the Moore Family's camps and resort out, including several thousands of acres, in the early 1930's. I believe the county was named MOORE county in those days. |
