Description |
View of an interior space (same as P024013 but a different angle) at the Belmont Forge. Writing on the photograph reads: "-- of Forge of Bellmont N.Y--" and next to it reads: "wheel Diam 24 feet." Writing on the back reads: "Water wheel diameter 24 ft / Trip hammer. / 'Bloom' or chunk of iron, containing / slag (or 'stone') as it came from the forge / was hammered to incorporate the stone in / mass before rolling into bars or rods. / The hammer was pivoted (at right / end) in picture. The shaft on the water / wheel extended through (under) the / hammer. On it was mounted a cam, / so constructed that it raised the / hammer and then let it drop suddenly" |
