View of charcoal kilns at the Belmont Forge. Writing on the photograph reads: "Front view of Charcoal Kilns at Forge" Writing around the photograph reads: "Note 'coal dirt' used for fill on riverbank. This is charcoal that has / passed between tines of coal fork (set "1 inch apart) and consist of pieces of / coal lift when charred sticks of wood are broken by wooden maul to make coal of size suitable for use in forges - note charcoal wagon." Writing on the back reads: "Belmont Forge near Chateaugay / Note Charcoal wagon 1884. / Rogers Co. kilns were like these, but / were located near the source of wood" |
