She was educated at Bennington College in Vermont and made a career as a free-lance writer and art historian. O'Brien was a life-long visitor to the Adirondack Park and became an active member in civic affairs of the region. She was a member of the 1980 Winter Olympic Bid Committee even before she was a resident of the park. O'Brien settled in Keene Valley, New York in 1982, where her community affiliation and contribution grew. She was the director of Cultural Education for the Amalgamated Clothing Works, the president of the Keene Valley Library and a member of the Board of Directors of the Adirondack Center Museum. O'Brien became the first vice-president of the Adirondack Mountain Club, the chairman of Johns Brook Lodge, and the art's editor for Adirondac Magazine. Her interest as an art historian flourished in the Adirondacks. After discovering Paula Goldsmith's work on Adirondack artists, O'Brien set out to modernize the list. This research collection is the result of O'Brien's dedication to discovering Adirondack artists. Margaret O'Brien died on February 22, 1987. The Adirondack Mountain Club built a winter camp at the Johns Brook Lodge facility in her honor.
