Biographical Note: Kenneth Durant (1889-1972) pioneered research on Adirondack guide-boats. A son of Frederick C. Durant, Kenneth spent summers as a young man at his parents' camp, Camp Cedars, on Forked Lake. Durant graduated from Harvard University and worked for the Philadelphia Bulletin, the Creel Commission, and was an aide to Col. Edward M. House, an advisor to President Woodrow Wilson. Durant headed the American office of TASS, the Soviet news agency, from 1923 to 1944. After his retirement, he edited an anthology about guide boats, Guide-Boat Days and Ways, in 1963. For over 20 years, Durant researched the history of the guide boat and began work on various projects on the subject, which remained incomplete at the time of his death in 1972. His wife, Helen (Van Dongen) Durant (1909-2006), edited the work that Durant began, publishing both The Naphtha Launch manuscript in 1976 and The Adirondack Guide-Boat manuscript in 1980. Helen Durant was a documentary filmmaker, who produced 29 films from 1928 to 1950. With her marriage to Durant, Helen became involved in the writing and research of Adirondack watercraft. Helen Durant died in 2006 at the age of 97.
