At the start of World War I, went to Baghdad as an official painter with the British Relief Force. When he returned to the US he built a studio in the Adirondacks (near St. Hubert's, NY) where he painted for three years, alone. He contracted polio as a youth which left one leg damaged. Upon leaving St. Hubert with his wife, he settled in France which proved to be influential to his paintings, creating movement of figures in his "love series." |
