Notes |
He came to America at age thirty-six in 1865 "to see the beautiful scenery of which [he] had read so much and to stay one or two years at the most." Success encouraged him to stay. He was among the first members of the American Water Color Society and the New York Etchers Club. Recognized and honored on both sides of the Atlantic, Van Elten's lyrical landscapes capture time of day and nature's characteristics in scenes of the mid-Atlantic coast and the mountain regions of the Adirondacks, Catskills, and White Mountains. |
