Admin/Biographical History |
Camp Ann was a hunting and fishing camp on South Lake started by Fred Ray Lindsey, Sr. and a group of his friends from the area of Scotia, NY in 1933. The donor provides this description and history of the camp: "Upon arriving at the "Landing" at the northwestern edge of the lake , all provisions had to be packed and loaded into large flat bottom boats called scows and navigated down the 5+ miles from the landing at the western edge of South Lake to the southeastern end of the lake, near the overflow ... Even after the advent of electricity -- generated by a complicated system that used water from the dam -- the camp was rustic at best. It consisted of 2 large open rooms with open loft space upstairs. Attached was a "bunk room", and later in the 50s a small bathroom with sink and commode. Water was pumped by hand at the kitchen sink, or by a small electric pump to the bathroom. Drinking water was lugged in by gallon jugs from a spring 2 miles away. Cooking and hot water was fueled by propane and there was a potbellied stove in the center between the large rooms for heat ... At one point in time the lands on the northern side of the lake -- owned by a lumber company -- were surveyed and offered as parcels for sale. My grandfather, holding a 99-year lease on the land Camp Ann was situated on from the state of New York, decided it was not necessary to purchase more land. Unfortunately, about a year after his death in 1967, the land lease was revoked, and my father (who inherited the camp) lost his rights to the camp. The camp was emptied, and a year or so later was burned by the conservation officers." |
