Scope & Content |
Typescript narrative recounting a camping trip on Third Lake in the Fulton Chain of lakes, with mounted photographs and a route map. The party of men and women likely traveled from Syracuse, and during their vacation they fished for trout, foraged for blueberries, canoed, and hiked nearby mountains. An annotated map in the book pinpoints their temporary home as a public campsite operated by the Conservation Commission on the south shore of Third Lake, between Old Forge and Inlet. Special attention is given to the fire prevention infrastructure the group encountered during their visit. There are several photographs of burned-over areas, observation towers, ranger stations, and even a portrait of a forest ranger, Edward S. Keniry, seated at a camp on his motorcycle. The campers were surprised to meet a female fire warden at Bald Mountain. Our anonymous narrator writes, "She remains here during the summer season almost continuously but passes her winters with her husband who is in charge of the fish hatchery in Old Forge. She must have been descended from sturdy stock. Indeed we later learned that she is the daughter of a game warden." Title on first page: "A week's sojourn in teh Adirondack Mountains" |
