Guide to the Big Moose History Project Collection, 1900-2005 (MS 09-398) Collection Number: MS 09-398 Extent: 1.25 linear ft. of textual materials and 2 v. scrapbooks (5 boxes) Donated by: Mark Barlow, August 2003, January 2005. Inclusive Dates: 1900-2005 Bulk Dates: 1997-2005 Access: Access to this collection is unrestricted. Abstract: The collection is comprised of materials created and compiled by the Big Moose Lake History Project Committee in compiling the book Big Moose Lake in the Adirondacks: the Story of the Lake, the Land, and the People. The collection includes correspondence, draft materials, reminiscences, newspaper clippings, reproductions of historic photographs, and two scrapbooks of material created by the Big Moose Lake Property Owners Association. Catalog Terms: Big Moose (N.Y.) Local history Reminiscences Photographs Big Moose Property Owners Association Scope and Content Note: The collection is comprised of materials created and compiled by the Big Moose Lake History Project Committee in compiling the book Big Moose Lake in the Adirondacks: the Story of the Lake, the Land, and the People. The collection includes correspondence, draft materials, reminiscences, newspaper clippings, reproductions of historic photographs, and two scrapbooks of material created by the Big Moose Lake Property Owners Association. Most of the material in the collection consists of photocopies or reproductions, although some old original materials are included. The collection includes a significant amount of material created and compiled by William Dunn related to the Dunn family. William Dunn's father, Nelson A. Dunn, owned a caretaking business on the lake in the 1920s-1940s. The folders of material created by Dunn contain original documents from his father's business, including excerpts from account books, correspondence, and cancelled checks, often accompanied by William Dunn's explanatory notes. The collection also includes correspondence between Dunn and Mark and Jane Barlow. Dunn's letters contain a great deal of information related to local history and lore, and include general trivia and miscellany about the area. The collection also includes a number of local histories, reminiscences, transcribed diaries, interviews, and collections of newspaper clippings related to the Big Moose Lake area and its year-round and seasonal residents. The reproductions of historic photographs are housed in their original envelopes. An index of photographs with brief descriptions is included. Photographs are undated; the bulk of the photographs were likely taken before 1940. Some photographs are missing. Index numbers of missing photographs are noted on the photograph envelopes. The Big Moose Lake Property Owners Association scrapbooks include newsletters, meeting minutes, reports, correspondence, photographs, postcards, news clippings, and copies of the organization's certificate of incorporation and by-laws. Organization Note: Folders have been arranged alphabetically. Biographical and Historical Note: The Big Moose History Project (also known as the Big Moose Lake History Project Committee) was a panel comprised of seasonal and year-round residents of the Big Moose Lake area formed in 1995 to capture the area's history. Members of the committee were: Jane A. Barlow, Mark Barlow, Frank Carey, William S. Dunn, Janet Stone Holmes, Joy Waldau Hostage, Annette J. Lux, Wanda Kinne Martin, Edith Pilcher, Mary Ann Simpson, and Barbara Kinne Wheeler. The committee conducted oral history interviews and historical research, and is responsible for the creation of the book Big Moose Lake in the Adirondacks: the Story of the Lake, the Land, and the People. The project was edited by Jane Barlow and was jointly published with the Syracuse University Press in 2004. Box and Folder Listing: BoxFolderFolder Title 11Big Moose Anecdotes - by Francis E.
