Admin/Biographical History |
Clarence Petty is described as "one of the most important and inspirational figures in the history of the Adirondack Park" by the New York Times. A conservationist, aviator, and wilderness advocate, Petty grew up in the Adirondacks, his family living what he has characterized as a "subsistence life," existing simply off the land. Later in life, Petty used his extensive knowledge and love of the Adirondacks to advocate for the defense of its wilderness. Petty's biographer, Christopher Angus, writes, "the transition from one who lived off the land to one who lived to protect it is one of the signatory elements of Petty's life." Clarence Petty was born on August 8, 1905 in the Adirondacks, the second of three sons of Catherine and Ellsworth Petty. His father was a guide and caretaker who had moved to the Adirondacks from Crown Point, New York, in the 1880s. His mother, a native of New York City, met his father while working as a cook in a hotel near Upper Saranac Lake, and the couple married in 1901. Young Clarence enjoyed a vigorous mountain childhood - he fished, hunted, and trapped by age six, and began working as a wilderness guide before he was a teenager. He attended a one-room grade school in Coreys, New York, and later attended junior and senior high school in Saranac Lake. Every week, Clarence and his older brother, Bill, would walk sixteen miles to Saranac Lake from their home in Coreys to attend school, staying with a family in town during the week. After graduating from high school in 1925, Petty went on to the New York State College of Forestry at Syracuse University (now the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry), where he graduated with a B.S. degree in 1930. Petty also began his lifetime pursuit of aviation around this time, earning his private pilot's license in 1931. In 1934, while working at a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp in East Dickinson, New York, Petty met his future wife, Ferne Hastings (1906-1994). The couple married in 1938, and had three sons. Petty began his professional career working as a forester for the Engineering Department of Western Union in 1930. From 1933 to 1942, he worked as a forester foreman and camp superintendent for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Soon after the CCC was abolished in 1942, he was commissioned as a senior-grade lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Reserve. After the war, Petty began a long and distinguished career with the New York State Conservation Department (later the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation). From 1946 until 1971, he worked for the Conservation Department - first as a district forest ranger, then as a pilot, then as a Forest Preserve specialist. Petty also worked for the Temporary Study Commission on the Future of the Adirondacks from 1968-1971, and worked for the Adirondack Park Agency from 1971 until his retirement in 1974. Petty would later return to the Department of Environmental Conservation to work as a consultant on river systems and wilderness area management plans from 1978-1979. In 1959, Petty was appointed as a liaison officer between the Conservation Department and the New York State Joint Legislative Committee on Natural Resources. Over the next few years, Petty, along with another forester, Neil Stout, would conduct field studies of lands in the Forest Preserve. They identified and described twelve potential wilderness areas of 10,000 acres or more, and studied sixty-seven additional non-wilderness tracts of at least 1,000 acres. While no action resulted from these studies at the time, the work of Petty and Stout would greatly influence the work of the Temporary Study Commission on the Future of the Adirondacks and the Adirondack Park Agency several years later. The field studies and maps that Petty and Stout worked on for the Joint Legislative Committee on Natural Resources would later be used when the nascent Adirondack Park Agency drafted its State Land Master Plan, which was created and approved as state policy in 1972. After being chosen as a member of the staff of the Temporary Study Commission on the Future of the Adirondacks in 1968, Petty would continue the type of work he had undertaken for the Joint Legislative Committee on Natural Resources several years earlier. His field studies helped to identify and describe additional potential wilderness areas, and provided the basis for a number of the Temporary Study Commission's recommendations. After his work on the Temporary Study Commission, Petty was hired to work for the newly established Adirondack Park Agency (APA). During his tenure at the APA, he helped survey 1,300 miles of rivers in the Adirondack Park to classify them as wild, scenic, or recreational in nature. In addition to his professional work in surveying and helping to protect state Forest Preserve lands and rivers, Petty expanded his role as an advocate for environmental issues after his retirement from the APA in 1974. He has been active in a number of local and national environmental advocacy groups, including Citizens to Save the Adirondack Park (of which he was chairman from 1974-1979), Adirondack Council, Adirondack Land Trust, Association for the Protection of the Adirondacks, Adirondack Conservancy, St. Lawrence County Environmental Management Council, Environmental Planning Lobby, Sierra Club, the Wilderness Society, and many others. Since the mid-1970s, Petty has also conducted a sustained letter-writing campaign, frequently writing letters to the editors of newspapers and letters to politicians and bureaucrats concerning a range of environmental and animal welfare questions. Alongside his lifelong commitment to the protection of wilderness, Petty maintained an association with aviation for nearly seventy years. He first received his private pilot's license in 1931. During the 1930s, Petty bought his first airplane, a Piper Cub, and kept it at Malone, New York. On weekends, when he had time off from the CCC, Petty would carry passengers and began to teach others to fly. During WWII, he served as a flight instructor training pilots for the Navy and Marines and flew naval transport aircraft in the Pacific. After the war, Petty combined his forestry training with his aviation skills, working on aerial fire fighting and fish stocking for the Conservation Department in the 1950s. He also worked as a private flight instructor from 1957 until 2000, with his Potsdam Flying School. As a result of Petty's tireless efforts to promote the protection of the Adirondacks, he has been recognized with a number of awards and honors, including a Lifetime Achievement Award and Outstanding Adirondack Conservationist Award from the Adirondack Council, the Adirondack Park Award from New York State Governor George Pataki, the Howard Zahniser Adirondack Award from the Association for the Protection of the Adirondacks, the Adirondack Stewardship Award from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the Wilderness Society's Robert Marshall Award, a North Country Citation by St. Lawrence University, a Distinguished Service Award from the State University of New York at Potsdam, and an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Paul Smith's College. He was also declared to be a Fellow of the Forest Preserve by New York State Governor Mario Cuomo. The Adirondack Council has established the Clarence Petty Internship Program in Petty's honor. Petty has been featured in a number of PBS films concerning the Adirondacks, including The Adirondacks, Cabin Country, and the award-winning Reflections of a Native Son. His life and perspectives have been highlighted in numerous television, radio, newspaper, and magazine stories, and he wrote a regular newspaper column, "Questions for Clarence," for the Adirondack Explorer, in which he answered readers' questions about the Adirondack Park. A biography of Petty's life, The Extraordinary Adirondack Journey of Clarence Petty: Wilderness Guide, Pilot, and Conservationist, was written by Christopher Angus and published by Syracuse University Press in 2002. |
