Description Section of a stump from a spruce tree, called a spruce "knee." The ribs for an Adirondack Guideboat are cut from spruce knees because the wood grain follows the curve from trunk to root, imparting strength to the cut ribs. From the boatbuilder's shop at Camp Pine Knot, Raquette Lake.
