Object Name Barrel
Date 1860-1890
Maker Handmade
Material Wood
Used Unknown
Description Barrel, probably handmade from a single hollow log as it has no barrel staves. Interior and exterior hand-tooled, leaving an appearance of faint vertical stripes. Two wooden hoops (one broken) reinforce the outside: one at top, one near middle. Wear along bottom evidence of a third hoop. The hoops are rough-cut from branches and may be steam-bent, are attached with square nails. The bottom is made of two flat planks (or one plank which split after it was nailed in place) with a narrow spline in between. Holes made by small rodents at bottom, esp. where there are cracks/radial checks in barrel side; one rodent hole is covered with metal sheet.
