Description Canal needle bar with ring handle, 1-inch steel, Gifford-Wood Co. No. 484: a light tool for splitting off ice cakes in the canal, where the plow grooving is clear. Can also be used in sinking a field of ice, because it makes a very small hole. Stamped "484 Gifford-Wood Co." According to accession form, some of the tools were used on Raquette Lake. Probably also used on Little Tupper Lake.
Notes Reference: 1925 Gifford-Wood Co. Catalog No. 1026N, p. 37. "The canal Needle Bar is a light tool for splitting off cakes in the canal, and where plow-grooving is well done it is effective. It will do most excellent service in sinking a field of ice, as it makes a very small hole."
