Notes Harold Chaffee spent time in Ray Brook Sanatorium in 1907 when he was 23 years old. He was originally from the Indian River area and then moved to Castorland. The New York State Hospital for Incipient Pulmonary Tuberculosis at Ray Brook was the first of it's kind in New York State, and second in the country (first in Massachusetts). It operated as a sanatorium until the mid-1960s when it transferred to the Drug Addiction Control Commission and ultimately became Adirondack Correctional Facility, a 700-man medium security prison. In between it was "Camp Adirondack," housing adult inmates involved in a Department of Environmental Conservation program, and the property was used as housing for officials during the 1980 Olympic Winter Games .
