Tupper Lake, hamlet
Caption from "Mostly Spruce and Hemlock":
"Crane, pioneer Tupper photographer, took this picture of the infant village of Tupper Lake from log-littered, stump-dotted Raquette Pond in the 1890s and it is probably the oldest extant view of the community. John Hurd's "Big Mill" is at left. The tenement building which still stands in lower Wawbeek Ave. is at right center. Most of the other structures were destroyed in the big fire of July 30, 1899. The forest still crowded down within a few hundred yards of the lakefront then."
