About the Shakers: Members of the communal Society of Believers in Christ's Second Coming sought places to live and practice their faith in rural areas. Thin brush strokes, canvas showing through. Traditional painter upper third of canvas with cumulus clouds in center over mountains that plunge to the lake shore forming strong horizontal; middle of canvas ridges slope downward into lake on either side forming ground and creating deep perspective. Two wedges of land jut into the lake from lower corners of the picture. A tree grows from the point on lower left and forms a dynamic diagonal a "V" up the canvas. Boats on the lake and cottages on both ridges. Perspective is good and color changes ok. A native of Scotland and largely self-taught, Andrew Melrose was a landscape painter and etcher. He lived briefly in Toronto, Canada, and New York

The house is set in a clearing, but at the edge of a forest. Frederic Remington, born in Canton, New York, first camped at Cranberry Lake in the Western Adirondacks in his teens and continued to visit there every summer until 1899. Albert Thompson, the owner of the log cabin depicted in Remington's oil, was reported to be Cranberry Lake's earliest settler in 1884. He built a one-room log cabin on the shore of nearby Silver Lake in that year. The cabin was a year-round residence for Thompson, his wife and six children until 1898 when he built a two-st

In the background are a stove, cat, stairs and a small table. George Bacon Wood, Jr. was born to a large and prominent Philadelphia Quaker family. Largely self-taught, he stated his training consisted of study from nature, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and advise from artist friends. Woods showed his works at the Annual Exhibition of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts almost every year from 1858 until 1887 but only occasionally elsewhere.
