Lake in foreground. On right is a boat with two people in it. In background are rolling mountains and sky. On left are trees and in the water is a ripple as though something jumped in or out of the water. Born on a pioneer farm in southern Ohio, Whittredge left it to study art in Cincinnati where he became an excellent landscapist. He spent the decade of the 1850s studying in Brussels, Paris, Dusseldorf, and Rome, returning to America in 1859 at which time he saw Cole's and Durand's work at The New-York Historical Society. He was moved to write: "when I looked at Durand's truly American landscape, so delicate and refined, such a faithful if in some parts somber delineation of our own
