Still Hunting On the First Snow: a Second Shot - Painting

The two men shooting show a self portrait of Tait about to fire and the other Matthew Brady (1823-96; the first great American photographer). According to Tait family tradition, this painting shows AFT firing over a snow covered mound at one of two deer (another having been shot) while Matthew Brady watches. Exhibited at the National Academy of Design 30th Annual in 1855, No. 147. Exhibited and sold at Leeds Sale, Dec. 18, 1863 (Titled, "A Second Shot: Still Hunting on the First Snow in the Chateaugay Forest"). An inscription on the back of the painting states: "In 1891 I cleaned and varnished with mastic varnish, A.F. Tait, N.A., 53 East 56th St., NY. Can be rubbed off/A Second Shot,

Levi Wells Prentice, a native of eastern Lewis County in New York's North Country, made four trips to the Adirondacks in the 1870s and produced a remarkable number of faithful copies of the natural landscape. Self-taught, Prentice's distinctively detailed paintings present a vision of an unspoiled Adirondack wilderness.
