Untitled: Adirondack Landscape Near Elizabethtown, Essex Co. - Painting

Depiction of mountains, clouds, ridges, valleys, with trees in the foreground. Exhibition Label: James Rosenberg fell in love with the Adirondacks in the 1880's when he spent his childhood summers hiking mountains and swimming in the AuSable River near Keene Valley. In 1923, after becoming a successful New York City lawyer, he built a summer home called "Shanty Brook" near a trout stream on the Hurricane Mountain Road in Elizabethtown. Rosenberg painted seriously most of his life and full time after retiring in 1947; the Adirondack landscape was his chief subject. Besides being a lawyer and artist, Rosenberg was also a philanthropist and writer, championing many human rights causes in A

Mountains and valley with a number of buildings in the center. Background depicts a darkened sky with mountains to the right and a patch of golden sunlight. This attention to characteristics of breed also made him a sought-after portrait painter. He was elected to the National Academy of Design in 1898 where, am

On the Bouquet River, Elizabethtown, N.Y. - Painting

Village, Essex County, New York - Painting

Depicts a cluster of domestic and industrial structures situated at the river's edge in the middle ground while magnificent mountain scenery fills the background and beautifully detailed woods and boulders occupy the foreground. From exhibition label: Alexander Lawrie made his first trip to the Adirondacks in the 1860s, after being wounded in the Civil War. He came with his friend and Philadelphia studio-mate William Trost Richards, who had been a frequent visitor to the region since the 1850s. Lawrie climbed as well as painted the High Peaks, and was among the first painters to climb Giant Mountain. His paintings of views seen from the top of Giant are dated 1867, one year after the firs

Image of Boquet Valley - Painting

Boquet Valley - Painting

Depicts a hillside to the right with rocks and colored trees. In the background a valley with a small town and mountains into the distance. The sky is blue with puffy clouds. This view of Elizabethtown by William Trost Richards (1833-1905) is the newest addition to the Adirondack Museum's art collection. A contemporary of A.F. Tait, Richards found the natural beauty and rugged character of the region inspiring, traveling here multiple times between 1853 and 1905. While Tait depicted a sportsman's paradise, the human presence in Richards' paintings is dwarfed by the grandeur of the landscape.
