Depicts a log cabin with the door open and two windows, a small overhang offers shade to the entrance way. Smoke is coming from the chimney. The house is set in a clearing, but at the edge of a forest. Frederic Remington, born in Canton, New York, first camped at Cranberry Lake in the Western Adirondacks in his teens and continued to visit there every summer until 1899. Albert Thompson, the owner of the log cabin depicted in Remington's oil, was reported to be Cranberry Lake's earliest settler in 1884. He built a one-room log cabin on the shore of nearby Silver Lake in that year. The cabin was a year-round residence for Thompson, his wife and six children until 1898 when he built a two-st
