The collection is comprised of materials created and compiled by Clarence Petty, described by the New York Times as "one of the most important and inspirational figures in the history of the Adirondack Park." An Adirondack native, conservationist, and aviator, Petty used his extensive knowledge of the Adirondacks to promote the defense of its wilderness. The bulk of the collection reflects Petty's concern with environmental issues and wilderness preservation, particularly in the Adirondacks, and includes materials relevant to Petty's professional work as a Forest Preserve specialist and his extensive personal and organizational advocacy for environmental conservation.
