Admin/Biographical History Barbara McMartin is described as "one of the giants of the Adirondacks," by the Adirondack Explorer. McMartin spent three decades publishing works on the region. Her eleven guidebooks, known as the "Discover the Adirondacks" series, established McMartin as an authority on the Adirondacks. However, her knowledge was not as guide alone, McMartin's publications in the 1990's and 2000's focused on the historical background and political issues of the park. McMartin published twenty-five books in total and numerous articles on recreation, conservation and natural history in Adirondac, Adirondack Life and the New York State Conservationist. Her devotion to the Adirondack's was not only in publication; she served as chairman and member of many Adirondack and environmental organizations.

McMartin was born November 18th, 1931 in Johnstown, NY to parents Malcolm and Barbara Clark McMartin. She grew up in close proximity to the Adirondack Park, spending summers at a family camp on Canada Lake. McMartin's early life spent in the country as a daughter of a country doctor, led her to pursue a collegiate career that took place elsewhere. McMartin moved closer to New York City. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Vasser College, and continued her Master's mathematics education at Hunter's College, before receiving her Doctorate degree from the City University of New York in 1972.

The same year McMartin received her Doctorate degree, she published her first guidebook, precipitating a return to her summer home in Canada Lake, and a commitment to a career as a writer. The popularity of the guidebook led to others, eleven in total. Her best-selling book, 50 Hikes in the Adirondacks, has sold nearly 60,000 copies. Currently, McMartin has over 220,000 copies of her works in print. Randy McNally, McMartin's publishing company, has referred to her as "the most prolific, best-known and most authoritative Adirondack guidebook author in the past half-century."

In the mid-1980's, McMartin was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer. After her treatment and subsequent remission, McMartin published a slew of material in the 1990's. Hides, Hemlock and Adirondack History (1992), The Great Forest of the Adirondacks (1994), To The Lake of the Skies (1996), The Adirondack Park: A Wildlands Quilt (2000), Perspectives on the Adirondacks: A Thirty-year Struggle by People Protecting Their Treasure (2002) and Privately Owned Adirondacks (2004) displaying her predilection for research. Jerold Pepper, director of the Adirondack Museum Library and Archives, says of McMartin's work, "A century from now, people will still be using her books as reference because they were so exhaustively researched."

McMartin's active publishing life did not hinder her as an advocate. She served on multiple committees and boards to protect and serve the Adirondack region. She served as Chairman on the Forest Preserve Advisory Committee (FPAC), Adirondack Mountain Club Forest Preserve Centennial Committee and on the Committee for the 1992 Adirondack Park Centennial. McMartin was a member of the Use and Information Advisory Committee to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, DEC Committee on Access for the Disabled to the Forest Preserve, Stewardship Task Force for the Open Space Plan and also a member of the High Peaks Wilderness Advisory Committee (HPWAC).

Barbara McMartin died of cancer on September 27, 2005.
